Full Description

Lithic scatter recorded during trial trenching evaluation carried out by CFA Archaeology in December 2022 - January 2023 ahead of construction of a new golf course (NJ92SE0192). A quantity of flint, including some possible flint tools ,was initially recovered from topsoil deposits within Trenches 38-45, 48, 52 and 53. Subsequently a number of additional seven trenches(140-146) were opened in this area. Further flint was recovered from the topsoil within Trenches 34-37 and 141, 142, 144, 145 and 146. The area in which the flints were located is a low flat-topped knoll, an area with better drainage than most of the evaluation area. Most of the flint was unworked but there were a number of possible blades and cores. No sub-surface features were identified. Subsequent test pitting was carried out over the area of the knoll in May and June 2023, comprising 31 test pits were dug aimed at covering the spread of recorded flints. A total of 944 lithics were recovered from the topsoil deposits, mainly flint but included six pieces of possible worked quartz and two pieces of chert material. No features were identified. The presence of blades up to 26 mm long, crested blades and evidence for use of opposed platform cores indicates blade working technology which dates from the Upper Palaeolithic or Early Mesolithic. Geometric microliths and possible obliquely blunted blades suggests activity in the Early Mesolithic. There is also evidence for possible Late Neolithic flint working. Further test pitting and a watching brief during topsoil stripping were carried out in June – August 2023. Thirty test pits were sited in the areas which had previously yielded the greatest quantity of flints. A total of 1,358 lithics were recovered form across the site 1,337 of these from the topsoil and 21 from the underlying natural. The watching brief recovered a further 246 lithics. Most of the lithics are flint, but the collection includes four quartzite flakes, two agate flakes (one of which may be a tiny awl) and two quartzite hammerstones. The assemblage also indicates blade production in the Late Upper Palaeolithic. A fragment of possible shouldered point may also be of this date. There is additional evidence for activity in the Early Mesolithic and for Late Neolithic flint working with the presence of flakes and multi-platform cores. The Balmedie material is derived from topsoil resting on a Late Glacial raised beach.
