Full Description
Flints and a flint working site. Flint artefacts and chippings were reportedly found in this area in 1961, including two arrowheads (one leaf-shaped, the other lozenge-shaped), a shaft scraper, an end scraper and a hammer stone. There is no local knowledge of finds in this area, which consists mainly of shifting dunes. Similar finds have been made over a period of many years all along this coast but nothing is known of these finds reported in 1961 (WD Simpson). A survey by AOC in 2006 recorded several areas of exposed flints in the area, all located within a large deflation area within the dunes. The main concentration was in an area recently exposed by storms. Three distinct areas of flint scatters were located during the survey within a wider area of flint occurrence. The flints appear to represent a working area and consist primarily of flakes and cores. No retouched pieces were found. An archaeological walkover survey was carried out on Menie Links by Headland Archaeology in 2009 ahead of golf course development.
