Full Description

A large assemblage of flints found on the farm, near Hill of Logie, up the side of the river. Flint knapping sites are to be found on terraces flanking the River Ythan between the rocky outcrops of Craig Starcie and the Hill of Logie at 9.1m OD. Many hundreds of specimens were collected by the late Rev T M Patey of Ellon, and were in the Anthropological Museum, University of Aberdeen as of 1958. Among them are 'abundant single, double, and triple-platform cores, long narrow flint blades, some of which exhibit use of the notching technique of mesolithic microlith production; steep scrapes; minutely dressed points, saws, and perforators; and flint fabricators, all (of which) indicate the presence of a flint-using community but the associated occurrence of rather crude imitations of barbed and tanged arrowheads on the other hand favours a somewhat later date'.
