Full Description

A number of sculptured Pictish stones which were discovered in the rockery at Glamis Manse. In 1967 the lower part of a cross-slab (Glamis No. 3), which had been built into a wall, was recorded. This was of grey sandstone, 58.4 cm long, 55.9 cm wide and 12.7 cm thick. The front is carved in relief, has interlace at the foot of the cross shaft, a panel to the right of the shaft has the hindquarters of a beast, probably a wolf, and the corresponding panel to the left has the lower part of a walking man. The back has the legs of two human figures standing close together. It has been removed from the rockery, was cleaned in 1995 and is now displayed within the church. In 1984 a thin slab (Glamis No. 4), 0.34 m x 0.29 m which bears a fragment of a triple-oval symbol with central 'double-comma' decoration was discovered in the rockery. It was subsequently lost until rediscovered when the rockery was re-laid in 1995, cleaned and is now displayed in the church. Also found in 1995 was a architectural fragment of carved stone and a grave-slab. The architectural fragment appears to have a pillar and scroll work, suggestive of a corner post of the Romanesque period of the 11-12th century AD. In 1999 a stone animal corbel fragment, probably medieval, was donated to the Meffan Institute, Forfar. It had been dug up from the garden at Glamis Manse by a previous headmaster. It measures 106 x 97 x 69 mm.
