Full Description

Late Bronze Age gold ribbon torcs found in Red Moss. Two, found between 1851-71, are in NMAS and a third, found in 1852, is in Marischal College Museum, Aberdeen (ABDUA 19690). This latter was said to have been found with a gold chain but this is not with it in the museum. It is not clear if these form part of a hoard or not. The torc held within the Marischal Museum collection is described as being complete, with bar terminals (knob ends) and having a weight of 21.2 grams and a diameter of 109mm. The torc is made from gold which has been beaten into a flat strip, then twisted into a spiral and formed into a neck ring with a hooked knob at either end. A note with the collection states that it was 'ploughed up on the lands of Belhelvie Lodge on the afternoon of the 19th April 1852 by Alexander Calder'.
