Full Description

A pair of massive cast bronze armlets, found some time before 1853 on the Links of Drumside. They were found three yards apart and at a depth of 6ft. One is an armlet of 'oval' type measuring 10.7cm by 8.4cm internally, 11.4cm wide across terminals, and weighing 1.75 lb. There are large apertures (for the insertion of enamel plates) in the terminals, body divided longitudinally into three ribs by feathered incision enclosed in channels, this detail being echoed on the terminals. The decoration is based on lyre palmette, broken back symbol, diagonal wave and sinuous saltire patterns executed in keeled ribbons, delicate trumpet stems and trumpet domes. This object is a single casting with chisel marks visible on the underside and several casting flaws. Now in NMAS. The second armlet also of cast bronze and of similar form is now lost. The exact findspot of the armlets is not been recorded. Drumside Links is now known as Blairton Links and comprises an area of high sand-dunes backed by undulating links about 1km in length from north-northeast to south-southwest by up to 640m in width.
