Full Description
Remains of a wooden boat discovered circa 1893 when drainage operations were being undertaken in Glen of Craigston. It was not recognised as such at first and was cut into three sections for easy removal. The parts were taken to Craigston Castle nearby. In 1951 they were removed to Marishal College Museum, where they were thought to be the remains of a medieval canoe. The front or bow portion is near rectangular in plan and measures 1.41 m long by 0.51 m across. The base of the boat was circa 40 mm thick. The supposed stern or after section measures 1.19 m in length and 0.7 m across. There is an external extension projecting beyond the end, within which is a hole of unknown function. It was only as late as 2000 that the object was recognised as a logboat and a sample taken for radiocarbon dating. The gave a date of 1890 to 1600 BC, making it one of the earliest wooden boats in Scotland.
