Full Description

Coin hoard, comprising gold and silver coins dating from the earliest Edwards (1272-1377). A report in the Aberdeen Journal 17 January 1827 states that during the digging of a sewer in Wellington Street, Footdee a hoard of gold and silver coins was found four feet under the surface. It was recorded in the article that some of the coins were removed by the workmen and picked up by bystanders and the few that remained for examination were in a poor state of preservation. At the time it was believed that the coins dated mostly from the reigns of Edward I to Edward III of England (1272-1377). This can not be confirmed because the hoard can no longer be traced. The newspaper account also refers to an earlier discovery perhaps circa 1806-27: no further information.
