Full Description
Glass jug, of Roman date, found in 1857 in a sandy hillock between the railway and the burn. The jug is light green in colour, 229mm high, the body short and conical with base diameter 133mm and is decorated with spiral writhing. The neck is tall, narrow and cylindrical, and the handle acutely angled from neck to body. It is flat and strap-like in form with a single line of raised 'beading' running down the outer side and terminates in three tines which grip the body. The middle tine is drawn down to within 50mm of base and is finished with a pincered fringe of six teeth. A number of dark brownish/wine coloured glass beads were also found, circa 13mm in diameter, but are now lost. The jug is thought to be of 2nd or early 3rd century AD date.
