Full Description

An Iron Age war trumpet, made of sheet bronze, recognisable as the stylised representation of a boar's head. It was found circa 1816 circa 450 m southwest of Leitchestown Farm while digging for peat. It is probably the termination of a carnyx shaped to resemble a wild boar, and is of complex construction of sheet bronze and brass. The use of brass, probably recycled Roman metal, and other evidence suggests a date between circa 80 and 250 AD. Excavation in 1994-1996 revealed that the carnyx had probably been deposited in a bog as an offering. Evidence also suggested that on a ridge nearby there had been human activity on a considerable timescale. The hill had been used for burial in the Middle Bronze Age and was in occupation in the Late Bronze Age - Iron Age as a possible enclosed site (see NJ56SW0027).
