Full Description

Tamdhu Distillery, founded in 1897. The existing buildings are mostly modern, but there are a few old buildings and the cottages appear to be original. The distillery was built in 1896-7 by the Tamdhu Distillery Co. and was purchased by Highland Distilleries Co. Ltd in 1899. It was closed between 1927 and 1947 and was extended to four stills in 1972, and then six in 1975 when it was rebuilt. In 1951, Tamdhu became one of the first distilleries to employ the Saladin Box malting process, a method which it continues to use on site today. The name Tamdhu means 'little dark hill' in Gaelic. A photographic survey was carried out in 2023 prior to proposed demolition of a former cottage, later in office use, and its redevelopment for an office building.
