Full Description

Remains of a farmstead recorded by field survey undertaken in 2011 by CFA Archaeology as part of the programme of works associated with the proposed extension to Rothes Wind Farm. This recorded a rectangular structure, measuring circa 12m north-south by 6m east-west. The farmstead is visible on a 1946 aerial photograph as a long rectangular building with three attached enclosures, and it appears on a 1976 OS map as a unroofed structure of two compartments. From the 1960s the land around the site was used for commercial forestry. Following removal of the plantation for the wind farm CFA carried out a more detailed field survey of the remains in 2012. The building, aligned almost north-south was in a very ruinous state, and the south end had been destroyed by forestry ploughing. The surviving remains measured 20m long by 6m wide, the denuded walls forming banks up to 0.6m in height. The walls had been built of irregular stones with no evidence of mortar. None of the enclosures visible on the 1946 photograph were located and these are presumed to have been destroyed during formation of the plantation.
