Full Description

Symbol stone which was built into the west side of a cist discovered during ploughing in 1894 and subsequently excavated (NJ16SW0020). The Class I Symbol stone, of two periods, is a rectangular sandstone slab, measuring roughly 4 ft (circa 1.2 m) long, 1 ft 10 in (0.56 m) wide and 2.5 in (6.35 cm) thick. One side bears an arch symbol or crescent, below which is a crescent and V-rod above a mirror and comb. These appear to have been pecked with little attempt to smooth the line and the weathering suggests that it stood as an earthfast upright after the other side was incised with a goose and a fish. A rough axe of granite or quartz was found beneath slab when lifted.
