Full Description

Fragment of a cross slab bearing a key pattern found whilst digging foundations of a store by the north pier of the harbour (NJ16NW0039) in 1895. It is ECMS 14 according to Allen and Anderson's (1903) numbering of the Burghead carved stones. See NJ16NW0005 for other early medieval carved stones from Burghead. The stone was likely amongst material from the destruction of much of the ramparts in the earlier 19th century used in construction of the village and harbour.
