Full Description
Three early medieval cross slab fragments of 8th or 9th century date, found near the point of the promontory (see also NJ16NW0005). These are ECMS 9, 12 and 13 using the Allen and Anderson (1903) numbering for the Burghead stones. ECMS 9, found a few years before 1861 whilst digging near the point, is carved in relief on one with a key pattern, and retaining a small part of the flat-band moulding that edged the slab. Two other pieces were found by H Young in the late 19th century: ECMS 12 found in September 1891 near the flagstaff at the end of the promontory is a small fragment bearing a key pattern within a short length of flatband moulding beside the key pattern. ECMS 13, found in 1892 on the beach near the end of the promontory, is a fragment of an upright cross slab, carved on one face with a key pattern (now broken).
