Full Description

A complete Class I Pictish symbol stone likely dating to the 5th-7th centuries AD found in 2019 during trenching works for electricity cables. The stone is an irregularly shaped monolith and likely once stood upright with the more pointed lower end planted in the earth. The boulder itself is a mica-rich granite that has a striking appearance in direct light. The stone has one face decorated with two large symbols, and the other faces appear undecorated. The two symbols are arranged vertically and carved with wide, now-shallow cuts. The upper symbol is a left-facing eagle of a design typical of Class I stones, though the legs and feet are somewhat obscured by wear. Immediately below this is a large notched rectangle and z-rod. The upper terminal of the z-rod is formed by a single line curved in a peanut shape with the bottom ends curled outwards. The lower terminal consists of three lobes; two parallel in front and one centred behind with the top visible. The notches in the rectangle are circular, with the left situated higher than the right, above and below the line of the rod, respectively. The top of the rectangle is decorated with two trumpet shapes above a circle. The stone measures 2.2 m in length, 0.89 m in width, and 0.47 m in diameter. The carving of the eagle measures 0.24 m in length and 0.32 m in width. The notched rectangle and z-rod measures 0.9 m in length and 0.55 m in width. Claimed as Treasure Trove (TT 99/23).
