Full Description

Remains of saltpans. An area of linear 'ponds' and the remains of an encircling dyke are all that remains of saltpans in the south-east side of Montrose Basin. A salthouse and salt banks are noted on maps of the basin in 1805. Mention is made of saltpans on the south side of the basin in the 12th century in a charter by King Malcolm IV granting the Abbey of Jedburgh one tenth of the 'salt works of Munros and the mill they erected'. The medieval saltworks may have lain further west from the later ones, nearer Old Montrose. A watching brief was undertaken during the removal of maritime club rush from an area within the wildlife centre at Craig Braes on the south side of the Montrose Basin in September 2008 by Scotia Archaeology. Using a toothless ditching bucket attached to a mechanical excavator, three trenches were opened across the most clearly defined of the bucket pots. No trace of any features of significance was uncovered during the excavation, not even the ghostings of timbers set into the edges of the bucket pot. The silt exposed in the three trenches was mostly pale buff in colour with lenses of blue-grey material and very occasional small pebbles. Observed during coastal zone assessment survey carried out by SCAPE between February and March 2009.
