Full Description

Remains of a sub-circular enclosure, situated on Brochstone Moor, bordering on the arable fields, on Greenford farm. Formerly interpreted as a fortified site, it is more likely to be a plantation bank or remains of droving. On the east and west runs a ditch, varying from 3.65- 6.1m, and with a max depth of nearly 1.5m, with slight indications of an earthen rampart on the counterscarp at the south-east, and slightly on the scarp of the south-west part. There is no trace of the ditch for a distance of circa 36.5m on the south, where flows the Larch, but the ground may have been marshy, forming a natural defence. No ditch exists on the north, but this may also have been marshy. This earthwork (comprising ditch with fragments of bank on the counterscarp) appears to be simply part of a system of old drove tracks of which three lines 50m west of the dividing fence constitute the main system. A track 3.0m wide curves down into the stream valley from the south, and it is noticeable that the others all converge towards its crossing point, where there is now a modern causeway. The surviving earthworks are visible on vertical aerial photographs taken by the RAF in 1953 and circa 2000-2 on the vertical aerial photograph overlay at the Angus HER. It was photographed in 1976 by John Dewar.
