Full Description

Rathmell Archaeology conducted an excavation at the site of an earthwork in August and September 2017, as part of a wider assessment of the historic environment within the Haddo House Deer Park (NJ83SE0152). The excavation focused on a well preserved area of earthwork to the northeast of a bridge (NJ83SE0157). Very little archaeological evidence was recorded; only the upper layer produced infrequent finds of ceramic building material at the southwestern end of the 8 m by 1 m trench. All layers had frequent inclusions of small sub-angular stones. The presence of these stones could represent the deposition of material during works carried out on the Burn of Kelly in the 19th century. The fact that this deposition created an earthwork with a bank and ditch was possibly fortuitous when the material was piled up on naturally higher ground.
