Full Description
Firmounth Road, an old drove road running from Dee-side over to the Mearns, part of which runs through the Glen Tanar Estate. It was used to drove cattle down from the northeast highlands to the markets at Laurencekirk and Crieff. Alleged to have been used as a military road in the 18th century. A watching brief was carried out by MAS in July 2019 during drainage of a waterlogged section of the Firnmouth track across the Forest of Birse (between NO4893889412 and NO4890189493. No evidence of archaeological features was recorded. The drove road would have been formed by passage of men and cattle over many years and there is likely to have been considerable braiding. It is unlikely that much if any was formally made up.
