Full Description

Remains of a lead and silver mine. Documentary records of the activity are from Jervise, who recorded that Sir David Linsay opened silver and lead mines and erected smelting works within the barony of Edzell and Glenesk in 1593-4, a further mention in 1602 and the OS, in 1861, were told that the narrow fissure in the rock of Gilfumman, was dug out while mining lead in 1678. The mining appears to have ceased by the end of the seventeenth century. These silver and lead workings were recorded by the OS in 1967 as comprising a small surface quarry, circa 8.0 m across, which is shown on the 2nd edition OS map of 1903 and the mainly natural fissure circa 27 m deep. Both are at the base of a scree slope which may obscure further workings. No traces of buildings or slag were recorded.
