Full Description

Remains of deer park and dyke associated with Kincardine Castle (NO67NE0008), a royal hunting castle since the 10th century. This part of the dyke would appear to be built later than the western part which may be of 10th century date. This part is first referred to in 1264 as the 'New Park' under construction by Alexander III. The Park is enclosed by the remains of a very high, thick fence of turves. On the north there is a well-defined raised bank. On the west it is intermittently traceable. On the east part ran with the Devilly Burn, the south side has been completely destroyed by cultivation. Most of the dyke is a simple ditch/dyke but the section on NO67NW (NO67NW0002) has internal and external ditches and an additional stretch at NO 6636 7809 has probably been constructed as a safeguard against possible erosion at that location. Unless the whole work was palisaded, it seems as if it was used as a means of turning the deer during the chase rather than containing them, as there are gaps where it crosses stream valleys. The extension to the north side is identical to the main work, but may not have been finished as it terminates abruptly on a gentle slope at NO 656 789. From this point a smaller bank runs downhill, but this is part of a later field boundary.

Period Notes
First referred to as the "New Park" in 1264-6.
