Full Description

Remains of rig and furrow. In the north west corner of Clerkhill Wood is an area of rig and furrow cultivation on a north west facing slope. The area covers 80 x 90 m. The breaks of slope to the north and east edges of the area possibly represent the original extent of the field. The rigs are aligned west-northwest and east-southeast down the shallow gradient and measure between 5-7m in breadth. Rig and furrow refers to a series of long, raised ridges separated by ditches used to prepare the ground for arable cultivation. The raised beds offered better drainage and this was a technique was characteristic of the medieval period.
