Full Description

Remains of a linear earthen bank which runs from NJ 8295 3997 to NJ 8323 3985, probably a boundary dyke. It consists of a well-preserved straight earthen bank with a ditch on the north, uphill, side. To the southwest a similar bank with the ditch on the west side is undoubtedly a continuation. Its sharply defined condition suggests that it is the remains of a medieval or later boundary dyke. Running southeast commencing about 10m east of the end is an eroded bank 2.5m wide, 0.4m high devoid of a ditch. A similar extension runs south from its west end and overlies the remains of a hut circle. These banks occur within an afforested area of weathered down rig and furrow which may be contemporary. Further sections of bank were recorded during a field survey in 2005 along with a possible enclosure at NJ 8280 3972. Forestry Commission field survey 2007 recorded a substantial sub-rectangular enclosure at NJ 8280 3983, although an 18th century estate plan (RHP711) shows the wood largely as it presently exists with no record of earthworks. The OS 1st edition map shows the linear bank with the area to the south annotated as 'Remains of Supposed Camp'.
