Full Description

Remains of three mounds with traditional associations. The New Statistical Account records two artificial mounds, 'in the field below the Kirkton' which were probably archery butts, and that 'of late' (circa 1845) one had been 'considerably impaired'. The mounds appear on both the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps as 'Bowbuts'. Crawford visited the site for the OS on 14 October 1939 and recorded the mounds as partially ploughed 'two big round barrows', standing at a height of circa 2.4 m (8 ft). He also noted a low mound at NO 2914 4148, between the previously recorded mounds, and suggested that this may represent the remains of a third barrow. When revisited by the OS in 1970, the easterly of the two mounds (NO 2920 4152) is oval measuring 50 m northwest-southeast by 30 m transversely and up to 2 m high. It was recorded that it appeared 'to be an entirely natural earthen knoll with no evidence to support Crawford's view that it is a barrow'. The remaining two mounds were under crop at the time of visit and recorded as being smaller than previously described but also appeared to be natural.
