Full Description

Possible site of a camp said to have been occupied by the Marquis of Montrose about 1645-6. This theory is supported by the OSA, but the NSA states that, 'in a recent History of the Highlands and Highland Clans, notice is taken of the Earl of Crawford and his followers from Fife having been in arms in the parish, which makes it questionable whether the entrenchment may not have been one of that body of troops'. O.G.S. Crawford, in 1925, noted slight traces of a double ditch, which he thought most unlikely to be Roman. The OS historic maps depict the area as 'Site of Camp', and show three of the four sides as pecked lines on the 1st edition map, each measuring about 350 ft (106.7 m). A small circular wood was planted on a mound a few years before 1861 to mark the site. There is now no trace of the earthwork. Cropmarks on aerial photographs taken by the RCAHMS in 1992, however, have revealed a number of linear marks in the field to the west of the site of the earthwork at NO 281 413 (NO24SE0079). The earthwork has almost been levelled by cultivation.
