Full Description
Site of a gallows, according to the OSA, which claims that the feudal barons of Ruthven placed their gallows on Candle Hill, which adjoins 'Hangman's Acre' to the southwest. Warden, however, calls the hill 'Gallows Hill'. He wrote in 1885 that the barons' courts were held upon the hill. The OS in 1970 recorded the local tradition about the gallows and described Candle Hill as 'a flat topped natural hillock'. The names 'Candle Hill' and 'Hangman's Acre' are still recorded on modern OS maps.
