Full Description
A rectangular dovecot constructed in 1696, within the grounds of Ballindalloch Castle (NJ13NE0004). Measuring 8.7m by 4.5m, it has a wallhead height of 4.5m rising to an overall height of 9m. It is South facing, with a centre door and a small datestone above that is inscribed with the letter 'B'. The walls are built of uncoursed rubble, and the stone is bonded with mortar. The external angles have roughly squared dressings, with chamfered ashlar sandstone around the doorway. There are a pair of square flightholes above the upper rat course, the lower course is missing, and a similar flight hole in the West gable. The piended Banffshire slate roof is intact, and the dovecot is crowned by a later white painted weatherboard ridge cupola with 16 small flightholes and a pyramidal slate roof. Internally there are two chambers lined with 844 stone slab nesting boxes. It is similar to the Wester Elchies dovecot (NJ24SE0011).
Period Notes
Dated 1696. The cupola was added later, at an unknown date. It was designated on 22/02/1972, and its status was changed from a B to an A on 09/11/1987.
