Full Description

Four Class I Pictish symbol stones, found in the Inveravon parish kirkyard. They are incised on rough, unprepared, boulders, with depictions as follows: (1) Mirror-case above an eagle with a mirror and comb on the right; (2) Crescent and V-rod above a triple disc and bar and mirror-and-comb; (3) Elephant (head and foreparts only); (4) Crescent and V-rod above an elephant. Stones 1-3 were noted in 1903, while stone 4 was discovered in 1964. The Pictish symbol stones were attached to the south wall of St Peter's, Inveravon Church (NJ13NE0027), but were exposed to the freeze thaw cycle in this exposed location with the mountings of the stones causing damp ingress to the Church through the wall. The stones were therefore removed from the south wall and relocated in December 2011 to the North porch of Inveravon Church following conservation work. The stones can be seen displayed in the North porch daily during daylight hours.
