Full Description

Remains of quarries which are shown as disused from the 2nd edition OS map onwards. The quarry produced flat laminated sheets ideal for building drystone dykes. There was some reuse in 2012 as a borrow pit for stone for construction of trackways to wind turbines on Ark Hill. A watching brief was carried out in June 2012 during extraction from the borrow pit at NO 3578 4217. A number of small mounds, comprising soil mixed with small pieces of broken quarry waster were recorded on the east side of the quarry. These may represent rough dressing of quarried stone before its removal from the site. No other signs of quarrying activity or other archaeological features or artefacts were recorded by the watching brief.
