Full Description
Remains of an extensive granite quarry, on the coast east of Longhaven, depicted on historic OS maps. At least parts of the quarry may also have been known as Longhaven Quarry and Gwight Quarry. The 1st edition shows numerous small quarry areas, and several buildings including a smithy. By the time of the 2nd edition the extent of the individual quarries had considerably expanded, in particular along the cliffs, and many more buildings are shown inlcuding at least one more smithy and several cranes. Current OS maps show the most extensive area of later quarrying to be in the western part of the area. The map also shows a disused railway line leading to the quarry, presumably constructed in the 20th century as it does not appear on the 1st or 2nd edition maps.
