Full Description
Remains of a possible motte. A grassy mound with a level top circa 10m by 7m. It stood over 5m high until the end of the 18th century, subsequently reduced by cultivation. A section cut through in circa 1853 by Dalrymple found a cist 2.4m by 0.6m and 0.6m deep contained only earth and a few horses teeth at the west end. In the centre of the mound a deposit of ashes and charcoal enclosed by a few rough boulders heaped round and over it. There is now no trace of the trench. The mound is undoubtedly artificial, it is probably a mutilated motte. The marshy ground to the east, south and west would require no extra defence but in the north where a ditch might have been expected, there is only level cultivated ground.
