Full Description
Remains of supposed Roman road, depicted as such on the 1st edition OS map. It is shown leading to a possible motte/homestead moat (NJ72NW0010), crossing the River Ugie with stepping stones, passing to the west of Pitcaple Castle (NJ72NW0009), ending at NJ 7291 2572. Much of the southern area is now covered by mixed woodland, and in this area the road or track can still be seen. Forestry Commission note that it is of substantial width with flanking banks, measuring circa 11 m between tops of the banks. It seems unlikely that the road is Roman in date, but could be a medieval trackway associated with NJ72NW0010 or later in date and forming a continuation of the Lawrence Road. General Roy's map shows a road in this general location in his survey, therefore it may be of military construction dating to the 18th century.
