Full Description

Remains of a field system defined by the footings of stone dykes running south of, and parallel to, the track leading to Leschangie. The three parallel fields are rectilinear and measure approximately 120 m by 13 m. There is one small quarry pit - presumably later - within the system. At the western end a further very denuded piece of dyke, curving roughly north-south, cuts off a tiny triangular piece of Forestry Commission ground in the north-west corner of the area. (NJ7416 1419). The rectilinearity of the fields suggests a historic date though it is not shown on the 1st Edition OS map. However, this map does suggest a tree-lined boundary within the woodland coincident with the southern side of the field system. The 19th century boundary north of the track also appears to continue the line of the short section of bank 'curving north-south' and lies further to the east than the present Forestry Commission boundary. The land to the south of the field system might also show evidence for clearance for agricultural use. The rectilinear system possibly post-dates the curvilinear, southern boundary to the wood.
