Full Description

Remains of a granite quarry, depicted from the 2nd edition OS map onwards, still in use for aggregates. A number of buildings, cranes and track/tramways are shown on the 2nd edition map. Site visit 2014 noted that a small part of the old quarry remains in the east corner, comprising a quarry face and some stone retaining walls. A building with granite walls and slate roof, with two small annexes, is the smithy shown on the OS 2nd edition map at NJ 76331695: it survives as a store. There is little or no trace of the forge positions inside. The quarry was originally connected by a tramway to Great North of Scotland Railway line at Forest Siding: here the 2nd edition map shows the siding, building and two loading cranes. The building, with a sliding door, survives on the lading wharf wall alongside the former Alford Valley Railway. The railway course is now used as the main access to the quarry.
