Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, and Class I Pictish symbol stone which is built into a wall of the farmstead. The farmstead itself is depicted on the OS map of 1846 as almost Z-plan with another building to the north. An enclosure lies to the southeast and southwest. Down the track to the southeast is a limekiln at NJ15032585. By the 1888 edition the farm (then named Ballnellan) retains a similar shape but there is a new building to the north, probably the house, and the kiln is no longer depicted. Today it is similar although one small building to the north has been removed. The corners of one end are broken off. The Pictish stone was recorded in the mid 19th century. The symbols, which are incised, include, at one end, three small circles enclosed within another circle, all drawn with a double outline. There are also curved lines of unknown meaning on the remaining part of the slab. The location of the stone is now unknown but the farm buildings have been covered with a cement wash, and it is likely the stone remains in situ covered by the cement.
