Full Description
Boating lake, containing the remains of islands in the shape of the British Isles. On the 2nd edition OS map (circa 1888) the southern end of the boating lake at Cooper Park has a group of wooded artificial islands sculpted into the shapes of Great Britain and Ireland. A further island is located to their north-west, at the centre of the lake (possibly representing Iceland). A sluice is shown at the north end of the lake. The grounds of Cooper Park were laid out by the Aberdeen architect A. Marshall Mackenzie, the brother in law of Colonel (later Sir) George A. Cooper who donated Grant Lodge and grounds (to be used as a park) to the people Elgin in 1903. The 2006 OS map and vertical aerial photographs taken in 1976 show that the southern islands are reduced in size and that the north-western one is larger. Photographic recording of the boating lake was carried out in 2011 ahead of works relating to Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme.
