Full Description

Remains of a water storage house and tank, an enclosure and site of a gravel pit. The 1st edition OS map shows a pit, two springs and a well. By the time of the 2nd edition OS map the pit is depicted as a gravel pit, a cistern shown to the southwest, with the earlier well and springs no longer shown. Remains of the enclosure are shown on the current edition OS map, the gravel pit and cistern no longer shown, with the area shown as woodland. The remains of a water storage house and tank were recorded in the southwest of the wooded area during a walkover survey by Highland Archaeology Services in November 2021 (NJ25SE0065). No remains of gravel pits were visible. The stone-built water holding tank with corrugated metal roof measured 5 m in length by 3 m in width. The structure was possibly constructed in the post-medieval period, then later modified in the modern period. Inside the structure the ceiling had been corbeled into an arch with brick while the outer walls are constructed from rough stone. The building may possibly relate to the cistern depicted on the 2nd edition map.
