Full Description
A large area of peat cuttings are visible on the south side of Clashnarae Hill. The factor (2003) said that there has never been any commercial peat cutting on the estate and that the entire extent of the peat cutting had been undertaken by tenants of the Kildrummy Estate from the mid 19th Century up until the 1980s under an informal tenants agreement with the Estate. No specific machinery has ever been used and it was suggested that the practices used to remove the peat had remained largely the same throughout the entire period of cutting (i.e. by hand and removed by horse drawn cart). The last known person to cut peat from the hill continued the practice until the 1980s. It appears therefore that there are no documentary records to date the peat cuttings but that the pratices were relatively consistent throughout the period of cutting. The peat has been removed down to the rock surface of the hill. At least three different phases could be distinguished by the types of stone clearance heaps. These consist of a number of linear clearance heaps, small clearance cairns in lines and scattered clearance cairns. A number of old peat stacks, now partially collapsed, also remain. Detailed survey of the peat cuttings was carried out in 2012 prior to construction of a windfarm. A total of 85 associated cairns were recorded, these measuring between 2m and 3.5m in diameter, surviving up to 0.6m in height. They are suggested to be either stances for drying of peat, or, more likely, piles of stones cleared to form the tracks leading into the peat cutting.
