Full Description
Remains of a mansion house, built in the late 18th century with later additions. Set within partly wooded grounds, the OS 1st edition map shows a walled garden to the east, a smaller garden area to the west, and outbuildings to the north. The buildings north of the house had been removed by the time of the 2nd edition map, but smaller structures added north of the west garden. The house is a single-storey with basement and attic (two-storey at the rear), five-bay rectangular plan classical house set in a large garden ground, and is rendered with raised granite ashlar margins. There is a lintel course at the ground floor, windows and an eaves course. A small flight of steps with a decorative iron balustrade leads to a central entrance which has a timber panelled door with narrow sidelights and a rectangular fanlight. There are three dormer windows. The central one has a triangular pediment and the flanking pair are polygonal and piended. The north and south gables have a round-arched window at the gable head. Beneath the arched window on the northern gable is a carved panel with a bird motif. There is a two storey, three bay wing, adjoining the rear, which was built in the early 21st century. The roof had grey slates, wide corniced chimney stacks and circular cans. On the southern side of the building is garden ground that extends to the edge of the property, and this is enclosed by a semi-circular retaining wall on the northern edge. A curving driveway leads from the southern side of the house to the entrance in the south-east corner where there is a pair of granite ashlar gatepiers. The house was damaged by fire in August 2016.
