Full Description
Remains of a dyke associated with the farmstead of Newpark (NO99NW0082). A topographic survey was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2012 ahead of the proposed Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. The dyke was between 1.1m and 1.4m wide and up to 1.1m high, of double-walled construction and built of random granite rubble. The faces are uncoursed and slightly battered. At the southern end the dyke appears to have been truncated during the construction of the adjacent A90. Sample excavations across the dyke were carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2013 at two locations. Investigation at NO 92848 99475 showed that the dyke sat on old topsoil, and there was no evidence of a construction cut for the dyke. The dyke was constructed of outer facing stones of granite blocks with a core of small hearting stones. A second section was excavated close to the remains of Newpark farmstead (NO99NW0082) and showed similar construction
