Full Description

The farmstead of Marywell is depicted on the OS map of 1867 as a U-plan steading with open court to the southeast. An enclosure is attached to the south side, and a horsemill to the west side of the steading. Further southwest are three further buildings and an enclosure. By the 2nd edition map the steading has been altered to an almost rectangular steading with central open court. Entrances lie in the southeast and southwest corners. Another building is attached to the northern corner. Only one building is depicted to the south. Today the steading retains a similar shape but the attached building to the north has now gone as has the building to the south. Building survey was carried out by MAS in 2015 ahead of proposed demolition and redevelopment. In its original form this was a moderately small steading. The original house may have been in the original south building - the present house had been built by 1903. At the same time the south steading building appears to have been at least partially rebuilt. A number of additional buildings shown on the 1902 and 1923 OS maps do not survive, and the horsemill had been removed by 1923.
