Full Description

Remains of a field system delimited by several stone clearance heaps. A group of about 17 cairns extends over an area of over 2ha. Surveyed by CSA in 2003-04 as part of Aberdeen to Lochside Gas Pipeline Project, found to consist of 30 visible cairns and a bank. Three cairns within the proposed wayleave were evaluated: Cairn A was a sub-rectangular enclosure of unclear function, and Cairns B and C proved to be clearance cairns of likely prehistoric date. Full excavation of Cairn B was carried out. In the course of topsoiling operations during the construction of the pipeline, a further 11 cairns were discovered within the wayleave and subsequently subjected to full excavation. The recovery of flint flakes from a number of the cairns and the peat growth covering some of them support the supposition that they had prehistoric origins. The cairnfield and its associated features are most likely associated with clearance activities in the later prehistoric period.
