Full Description
The remains of field system with circa 350 small stone clearance cairns and several small fields lie scattered over the northern slopes of Carn Ghrantaich. The cairns are now covered with turf and are irregular in plan. The fields are defined by field banks, clearance cairns and lynchets. Within the area also remains of four rectangular buildings circa 1.2m high, five associated enclosures and field walls forming a minor depopulated settlement indicating continuance of occupation. Site surveyed during a pre-afforestation walkover survey carried out in August 2009 by S. Farrell. A possible pre-historic cairn was noted at this time at NJ 17476/28626, the highest point of the site. It measures 4m in diameter and 0.5 high, partly disturbed by sheep scrape on the south side with what may be an upright stone with possible kerb stones visible on the west side. The 2009 survey also recorded pens, buildings and a sheepfold.
