Full Description

Graveyard and site of a chapel. No trace of the Chapel of Dounan / Downan, a pre-Reformation chapel, remains but its graveyard has been enlarged and is still in use. Sources indicate that the walls of the chapel were upstanding in the late 18th century (1794) but had been destroyed by 1869. Later gravestones probably cover the chapel site. OS site visit in 1966 found no visible trace of the chapel. According to local tradition, a small cross-inscribed stone that lies near the chapel, marked the burial place of some of those killed in the Battle of Glenlivet (NJ22NW0003), which was fought near this site in 1594. Other unmarked headstones are said to commemorate those who fell in the battle including Sir Lachlan MacLean of Glenlivet / Duart. Monumental inscriptions within the graveyard have been recorded by the Moray Burial Ground Research Group.
