Full Description

Gardner's cottage, still in residential use, built in the late 19th century to the west of Muchalls Castle (NO89SE0004). The 1st edition OS map shows a rectangular-plan building, which has been extended to L-plan on the 2nd edition OS map. Current OS maps show it has been reduced, with a later building added partially on the site of the later addition. It is a single-storey T-plan cottage that is roughcast with sandstone dressings and crowsteps and cement over sandstone quoins. The north entrance elevation has a doorway in the re-entrant angle and a segmental-arched single window in an advanced wing to the outer right. The west elevation has three single windows and the east elevation has an advanced gabled wing to the outer left with two single windows. The south elevation has a single window to the outer right and two segmental-arched windows to the advanced wing to the outer left. The grey slate roof has coped gablehead stacks, yellow fireclay ridging, crowstepped gables and beaked skewputts.
