Full Description
Remains of a farmstead, comprising three buildings lying on the south side of a roughly triangular enclosure, all reduced to their footings. The largest building is of three main compartments with an outshot at each end. The two smaller buildings are both single compartment. Adjacent to the farmstead there are extensive traces of rig and furrow cultivation. The enclosure appears on the OS 2nd edition 1888 map, but none of the buildings are shown on either the 1st or 2nd edition OS maps. A detailed survey and evaluation of this site were carried out in 2003-04 by CFA Archaeology Ltd as part of the Aberdeen-Lochside Gas Pipeline Project, with five trenches excavated by machine. Possible features including a wall and a pit were found within one of the trial trenches. Sections were excavated by hand across two of the buildings (8 and 9), and through a feature which appeared to be natural in origin. Buildings 8 and 9 were well preserved, with upstanding walls several courses high and with evidence for internal deposits and features. The pipeline was re-routed around the farmstead and no further archaeological work was required.
