Full Description
Farmstead, still in use, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps and named 'Ashentilly'. The 1st edition OS map shows a quadrangular steading with a narrow entrance at each end of the southern range. There are various projections to the west and north range, a horsemill to the west, six associated rectangular and L-plan buildings around the steading, and one small circular building to the south. The 2nd edition OS map shows some alterations to the projections on the north and west ranges, and a T-plan building has been added to the west. Two of the associated buildings have been removed and one shortened or replaced with a smaller building. Current maps show two more of the associated buildings have been removed. Standing building survey of the steading was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in June 2021 prior to proposed demolition. The farm is probably early 19th century in date. The west-southwest range comprised mainly a mill with residential accommodation at the south end of this range a later 19th century addition. The interiors of the north-northwest and east-northeast ranges were later concreted and wood and concrete cattle feeders added.
