Full Description
Roofless ruins of small rectangular church, also known as Dalmaik Old Parish Church, and associated graveyard. It was dedicated to St Mayot when the church was confirmed to Aberdeen Cathedral in 1157. The church was abandoned in 1837 after a new parish church was opened (NO79NE0043). The building is mainly 17th century in date but incorporates some earlier, 16th century, masonry. It is rubble built with random stones, mostly of granite, and measures circa 17.2 m by 5.75 m internally. There are sections of surviving lime render. The west gable is complete, topped with a bellcote, with corbels for a west gallery, but the north and south walls only partially survive. The central pair of windows in the south flank were rebuilt in the mid 18th century. The east gable is complete but covered in thick vegetation. A piscina and the remains of a font are built into the wall near the southwest door, and a flat slab near the east end is embellished with a plain incised cross. There is a 1790 bell. The letters L AS on the north side are the initials of the Rev Alex Scroggy 1607-21. There is a small commemorative plaque stating the church remains were renovated in 1941. The graveyard is enclosed by rubble walls. It contains the First World War Commonwealth war grave of Private David Burnett Smith, Gordon Highlanders.
