Full Description
Remains of a croft that is depicted on both the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. They show two rectangular buildings, of which the footings of the southern one still stand on the 2005 map. A topographic survey was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2012 in advance of construction associated with the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. The remains comprise two buildings with associated annexes. The northern range has substantially collapsed and is overgrown, obscured by dumps of stone. The range measured 30m by 7.8m externally, with wall faces of uncoursed granite rubble surviving up to 0.5m high in the southwest corner. Elsewhere the extent of this range was marked by a spread of grassed-over tumbled stone. The main structure of the southern range was a largely collapsed rectangular two-roomed stone building measuring 9.35m by 4m externally with an entrance on the south east the remains of a small annex at the north east. A collapsed stone dyke extended circa 13m southeast from the eastern corner of the annex, joining the main building to a small rectangular enclosure. Several small earthen mounds and a large dump of farm machinery were recorded to the west of the wall. Excavation carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2013 on two ranges of structures recorded by the earlier survey revealed multi-phased structures. Within each structure five major phases of construction were identified. No certain dating evidence was found from the southern range, so the phasing of the two structures could not be linked. The earliest construction at Auchintoul is dated by limited finds evidence to the early 19th century.
